Past event: 'Japanese stab bindings', hosted by Paper Boat Press

  • Paper Boat Press 60 Ashgrove Crescent Ashgrove, QLD, 4060 Australia (map)

Due to popular demand, Paper Boat Press has invited Michelle to lead a third bookbinding workshop specially inspired by the artisans from within the pages of their recently published book 'Utsuwa - Japanese objects for everyday use'.

Learn a variety of Japanese stab bindings, by making a set of FOUR x A6 notebooks using the most widely recognised Oriental bindings: Traditional 4-hole; Noble; Tortoiseshell; and Hemp-leaf stitching patterns.

Choose your favourite technique and make yourself an A5 hardcover or soft-leather bound journal using Momoko Otani or Sumiko Aoki's Utsuwa printed fabric and papers.

This is a great workshop for beginner bookbinders, and is also exciting for those who already have experience with western bookbinding because it offers a new set of decorative opportunities.

All materials are provided in the workshop, and you can choose from a variety of Utsuwa card, printed fabric and papers with additional ceramic embellishments. Coordinate your designs with a colourful range of waxed-linen thread to make a set of unique and personalised books.

All tools and materials are provided as part of the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own equipment and papers from home.

Comprehensive instructions and templates are also included, to enable you to continue making more books after the workshop.
